Cancer victim convinced mobile phone gave him disease

It gave me cancer, says dad

Angry Andrew Heath is convinced his mobile phone gave him cancer after using it up to six hours a day.
Andrew, 43, had to have the entire left side of his mouth rebuilt in five operations after developing a rare cancerous tumour in his jaw.
''Nothing but my phone could have caused this,'' said Andrew last night. ''No one seems to want to admit they are dangerous and people should be warned about the risks.''

He spoke out as a major new study, funded by the World Health Organisation, is about to be published linking mobiles with four different types of tumour.

Andrew, a father of one, spent hours on his mobile while working as a road surface preparation engineer.
''My phone was never far from me as I had to keep in touch with people working in the middle of the night on motorways and railways,'' he said. ''I would talk on it for six hours a day, then sleep with it next to me. I remember my phone used to make my mouth tingle, but didn't think any more of it at the time.''

But Andrew, of Broughton, Lincs, became aware of a lump in his jaw five years ago and a dentist referred him to hospital.

His wife Julie, 42, said: ''The X-ray was terrifying. It looked like half his jaw had been eaten away.''

Doctors diagnosed a rare ameloblastoma tumour and he had the growth removed. But doctors found cancerous tissue around it and had to operate again to save his life. Since then half his jaw has been rebuilt using titanium plates and skin and bones from his hips, leg and chest. He has been left with hair in his mouth, because the skin is from another part of his body.

Andrew, who is due to have another graft from his shoulder to rebuild his jaw again, said: ''I have migraines all the time and my mouth feels like I have been to the dentist and had a local anaesthetic. But the work the doctors have done has been incredible.''

He added: ''I still use a mobile phone because the way I see it the damage has been done now. But I'd advise everyone to cut down the time they spend on one.''

Andrew's tumour is too rare for doctors to be able to tell for certain whether it can be caused by mobiles, and is not included in the WHO's new research.

But Graham Philips of mobile phone action group Powerwatch said: ''The current research would suggest heavy mobile use could have been a factor. Much more work needs to be done urgently.''
