Abstract

Recovery of Residents’ Health Following the Removal of a
Mobile Phone Base Station from the Roof of a Condominium
Building - A Follow Up

Background:
There has been concern about the possible
adverse health effects of exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic
radiation (RFR-EMF) emitted from mobile phone
base station antennas.

Aim: To identify the possible adverse health effects among
residents of a condominium on which a mobile phone base
station has been mounted. This research was conducted without
external funding in order to avoid conflict of interest.

Method: A health survey and interviews were conducted
with each of 107 residents of the condominium. These health
surveys and face-to-face interviews were conducted twice.
The first survey and interviews were done while the base station
was in operation. The second survey and interviews were
repeated three months after the base station antennas were
removed. The residents’ health was compared and changes
analyzed based on the results of the health survey and interviews
during operation of the antennas and after their removal,
which means that RFR-EMF emissions had stopped.

Results: A number of cases with health effects among the
residents living under the antennas were detected. Residents
living under the mobile phone base station reported a number
of health effects in both the survey and interviews.
These adverse health effects improved after removal of the
antennas. The researchers could identify no other factors that
could explain the improvement in health. These surveys and
interviews suggest that there are possible adverse health
effects related to RFR-EMF, for residents living below mobile
phone base stations.

Conclusions and recommendations: The results of these surveys
and interviews indicate possible adverse health effects
connected with mobile phone base stations. Further research
is recommended on possible adverse health effects of RFREMF
emitted from mobile phone base stations.
These results lead us to question the construction of mobile
phone base stations on top of buildings such as condominiums
or houses.

Key words: mobile phone, base station, radiofrequency radiation
(RFR), Electromagnetic field (EMF), health problems, residents,
inhabitants.
