The introduction of LoRa and the planned participation in the LoRa Alliance are key factors in accelerating the national and international development of Internet of Things. LoRa stands for ‘Long Range’ and makes it possible to connect millions of low-data and low-energy devices to the Internetin a cost-effective way. This can help organizations improve their services and business processes, reduce costs and develop new business models.

KPN has offered Machine-2-Machine (M2M) connectivity across 2G, 3G and 4G networks for the past five years now. This technology has facilitated for example mobile POS payment on café terraces and wireless connectivity in cars. Other low-data applications require only brief connectivity and, when transferring data via LoRa, the battery can run for up to ten years on a single AA battery.

KPN plans to join the LoRaâ„¢ Alliance. This alliance will be launched in March and is an initiative of major global corporations over the world. This alliance aims to develop an international standard for Low Power Wide Area Networks. KPN will be joined by Bouygues Telecom (France), SingTel, Swisscom, Proximus, and Fastnet (a subsidiary of South Africa Telecom). Other participants include major industrial companies within the IoT ecosystem, such as IBM, Sagemcom, Kerlink, Actility, IMST, Eolane and Microchip.
