KPN said it has successfully tested its 5G network between different locations in the Netherlands. The company made phone and video calls and held data sessions between its 5G FieldLab in the Port of Rotterdam and its Technology Lab in The Hague, using the 3.5 GHz spectrum band. The tests were made using a number of 5G smartphones, namely the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, the Huawei Mate 20 X and an Oppo Reno 5G. A 10 GBps transmission network was used for the connection and a download speed of 1.3 Gbps was achieved with one of the smartphones.

Tests on all 5G frequencies, with 700MHz , 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz
For the 5G tests, KPN said it will use the three 5G frequency bands set to first become available first in Europe: the 700 MHz band that will be available in the Netherlands after the frequency auction in 2020 for 5G, the 3.5 GHz band that should be available from 2022 and the 26 GHz band, which does not yet have any availability time frame in the Netherlands. The operator started testing 5G at 700 MHz at the beginning of October. It will soon trial the network with 5G handsets that use the frequency band. KPN said it has in the past year gained extensive experience with the 700 MHz spectrum in the 5G FieldLab in Rotterdam. Various applications were tested in Rotterdam. The company will soon also carry out tests with 26 GHz spectrum in Amsterdam.

KPN has 5G Field Labs in Amsterdam Southeast, the Port of Rotterdam, Drenthe and Helmond.

''KPN is gradually making its mobile network technically ready for 5G,'' said Babak Fouladi, KPN's chief technology & digital officer. ''In addition, we extensively test the latest radio technology and antennas and also use 5G frequencies in combination with the latest smartphones. Thanks to 5G, countless new opportunities are created for consumers, and in particular for the business community in the Netherlands. We think that 5G is an essential catalyst for the further digitization of Dutch society. ''
