Scores of residents and shop owners in Havouza, Limassol, staged a protest on Saturday demanding the removal of a mobile phone antenna which they deem responsible for increased cancer cases in the area.

Protesters said that due to the antenna, standing the last ten years on the roof of an apartment building on Nikos and Despina Pattichis Avenue, they are exposed to excessive electro-magnetic radiation, leading to at least 10 cancer deaths in the area. They also said that several area residents have been diagnosed with cancer and are “fighting for their lives”.

Representative of the area’s shop owners, Polys Kattashis, told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that unless the antenna is removed, they will up measures.

At the protest were also a number of area residents with cancer who demanded the removal of the antenna so that their children won’t suffer the same as them.

Residents commissioned a report on the risks of exposure levels of high frequency electromagnetic radiation, which is based on the permissible limit set by the Austrian Medical Association, and which is much lower than those of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Ra-diation Protection (ICNIRP).

According to the report, the CNA said, 100 meters from the antenna the recorded maximum values of electromagnetic radiation was 20,000 microwatts per sq meter, while the normal lim-its set by the Austrian Medical Association is 1 μW / m2.

The report states that the high risk to public health and especially children is obvious, and advises the immediate removal of the antenna.

Met die '20,000 microwatts per sq meter' kunnen we ons voorstellen dat veel mensen kanker krijgen.
