Elections

The composition of the ICNIRP Commission for the term of office 2016-2020 is as below. The new term of office starts right after the End of the upcoming IRPA Congress on 13 May 2016.

Background information
As per the ICNIRP Statutes, every four year ICNIRP elects the Commission members. For the term of office 2016-2020, the election took place at the ICNIRP Annual General Meeting, 18-20 November 2015, San Antonio, USA. Following the call for nominations extended to the Commission members, the IRPA societies and international and national public radiation protection authorities 24 candidates stood for candidature. The ICNIRP Scientific Secretariat was confirmed.

Van Rongen, secretaris van de commissie EMV van de Gezondheidsraad, is dus benoemd tot voorzitter, een beloning voor het ''succesvolle'' ontkenningsbeleid in Nederland? De slachtoffers zullen er niet blij mee zijn.

Van een lezer uit Zwitserland kregen we verder het volgende aanvullende commentaar:

Van Prof. Dr. Martin Röösli moet men ook niet al te veel verwachten.
Hij is in Zwitserland een veel gevraagd EHS-deskundige. Zijn mening
kort samengevat: EHS bestaat. De klachten van de patiënten zijn reëel.
Maar bij deze klachten moet gezocht worden naar andere oorzaken dan
straling. Vaak ook zijn het angsten voor elektrosmog, die in een zo
vroeg mogelijk stadium psychiatrisch behandeld moeten worden, voordat
de angsten chronisch zijn. Röösli sluit niet uit dat er werkelijk
mensen zijn die reageren op elektrosmog, maar in de laboratorium
omgeving heeft hij dit naar zijn zeggen niet aan proefpersonen kunnen
aantonen. Het is volgens hem wetenschappelijk niet bewezen.

En verder commentaar van John Weigel uit Ierland:
Of additional concern is the election of Eric van Rongen (chairman) and Maria Feychting (vice chair) of International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) . This group is responsible for safety standards for the wireless industry. Van Rongen is a denier of Electrosensitivity as a condition (just like Prof. Simon Wessely) while Feychting is known for the long standing opinion that there is no any evidence of brain cancer risk. To have these people in charge of an organization responsible for safety standards is less than balanced.

Mr van Rongen has been quoted as saying, ''Everybody in Ireland and the rest of the world has been continually exposed to the geomagnetic fields throughout his or her lifetime. There are no indications at all that such exposure may lead to adverse health effects''.

A third member of I.C.N.I.R.P. is Gunnhild Oftedal, of Norway, whose research ''revealed no association between maternal prenatal of paternal preconceptional cell phone exposure and any of the studied pregnancy outcomes.''

Thus, I.C.N.I.R.P. should logically be considered compromised in the face of an abundance of evidence that microwave technology is safe.
