B.C. School Watchdog is first to demand schools without WiFi

By Safe School Committee

COQUITLAM, BC, May 28, 2012 -- /CNW/ - Parents elected to watch over B.C. schools want every district in the province to create one ''microwave-free'' school without WiFi, and to stop installing new wifi systems altogether.

The resolution was approved after a majority vote this weekend at the annual meeting of the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils. It represents parents in every school district in B.C. and is funded in part by the provincial government.

Last year the World Health Organization placed WiFi and other microwave radiation on a Cancer watch-list. Many school Boards have installed extensive WiFi systems that place microwave transmitters in classrooms.

The Confederation reported that students in some of those schools have developed health symptoms including headaches, dizziness, and an inability to concentrate.

''We voted to err on the side of caution,'' said Confederation president Ann Whiteaker.

The Saanich District School Board on Vancouver Island has already banned WiFi in its elementary schools. Earlier this year the Ontario Catholic Teachers Union warned its members that wifi in classrooms is a potential health hazard and called for a halt to further wifi installations.
