South Korean operator SK Telecom announced it has passed the milestone of 1 million 5G subscribers in the first 140 days since the launch of its 5G network on 3 April. The company’s 5G subscribers account for more than 3.5 percent of SK Telecom’s total subscriber base of 28 million.

According to SK Telecom, its 5G user base grew twice as fast as its 4G LTE customer base. It took about eight months for LTE to have over 1 million subscribers after its launch in July 2011. SK Telecom also reports that the average monthly data usage of customers who switched devices from LTE to 5G has increased about 65 percent, from 20.4GB (LTE) to 33.7GB (5G).

SK Telecom commercially launched its 5G service on 3 April. SK Telecom had 880,000 5G customers on 19 August, but the number of 5G subscribers soared in two days with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. SK Telecom currently offers three 5G smartphones, the Galaxy S10 5G, V50 ThinQ 5G, Galaxy Note 10 5G.
Back in July, SK Telecom announced its strategy to build a ‘5G Cluster’ nationwide. SK Telecom said its ‘5G Cluster’ is an advanced 5G environment with AR, VR, and AI technologies. The company plans to build the 5G Cluster in business districts, parks, factories etc. to provide differentiated 5G service and benefits in both of B2C and B2B sectors.

South Korea reached the milestone of 2 million 5G subscribers in four months after the service was commercially launched on the local market, Yonhap news agency recently reported, citing industry data. The country’s three mobile operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus commercially launched fully-fledged 5G mobile networks on 3 April. The number of South Koreans with subscriptions to a 5G service stood at 260,000 at the beginning of May, to reach 1 million in mid-June.
