Filipijnen: Community resistance delays building of additional cell sites in the Philippines

The resistance of some communities to build cell sites in their villages or subdivisions is among the bottlenecks to improve mobile connectivity in the country, said National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba.

''Right now, under the existing law, homeowners associations should give their consent before a cell site or a telecommunications infrastructure is put up inside their village or subdivision...but these homeowner associations do not give permits, that's why there are no cell sites or telecoms infra in their backyard,'' said Cordoba in a report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA) during the Philippine Telecoms Summit on 9-10 March 2017.

Telecommunication firms said some homeowners' associations deny their request for permits to construct cell sites in their community because of the alleged harmful radiation they emit.
