The evaluation of 164 study results on arthropods (especially insects) clearly shows: The harmful effect of non-ionizing radiation on insects is considered proven. Non-ionizing radiation includes, among other things, mobile phone radiation and radiation from high-voltage power lines. In particular, the massive expansion of the mobile network to 5G is a serious threat to our ecosystems and would contribute to insect decline.

On behalf of the Federal Office for the Environment, experts from the University of Neuchâtel compiled an overview of the previous research results on the effects of non-ionizing radiation (NIS or NI radiation) 1 on insects, spiders and other arthropods (arthropods). Of the 164 study results, 132 provided negative effects, which corresponds to 80% of all results. Since the results largely agree with each other, there is a high probability that the observed effects actually occur in reality.
Serious effects of NI radiation on insects.
It is the first time that scientists have systematically investigated and evaluated the previously published studies on the effects of NI radiation on arthropods according to internationally recognized and proven methods. This systematic review is of high quality: the evaluations of the individual studies are transparent and comprehensible.
In the studies examined, arthropods were exposed to different NI radiation sources and examined for biologically relevant consequences. NI radiation penetrates the animals' bodies and triggers processes there, in many cases with consequences for reproduction, locomotion, behaviour, foraging and DNA, i.e. the genetic material. The animal phylum of arthropods includes insects, spiders, centipedes and beetles. The approximately one million species of this strain are an essential part of many food chains and play an important role in our ecosystems.
